Trex composite deck boards for a Long Island deck

A new Trex deck is a big purchase. Most Long Island homeowners want a real number before they call anyone. Here is how the cost usually breaks down.

Every yard is different. Treat these figures as typical ranges and not as a quote.

How much does a Trex deck cost per square foot?

Installed Trex decks on Long Island often run $35 to $60 per square foot. That price usually covers the frame and footings. It also covers the boards, hardware and labor. Railings, stairs and permits can push the total higher.

Deck sizeTypical installed range
200 sq ft$7,000 to $12,000
300 sq ft$10,500 to $18,000
400 sq ft$14,000 to $24,000
500 sq ft$17,500 to $30,000

Larger decks often cost a little less per square foot. Setup and design costs get spread over more space.

Which Trex product line are you pricing?

Trex sells several product lines at different price points. Enhance is the entry-level line. Transcend sits near the top of the range and costs more per board.

The board line changes the material cost. Labor stays about the same across lines. So the gap in total price is smaller than the gap in board price.

What else changes the price of a Trex deck?

The boards are only part of the bill. These items often decide where your deck lands in the range.

  • Railings. Composite railings can add a large share of the total.
  • Stairs. Each step adds framing, boards and labor.
  • Height. A raised deck needs taller posts, more bracing and more railing.
  • Framing. Trex boards usually need joists every 16 inches. Older frames built wider apart may need extra joists.
  • Fasteners. Hidden fasteners give a clean look but add some cost.
  • Removal. Tearing out an old deck adds labor and disposal fees.
  • Permits. Most new decks on Long Island need a building permit and drawings.

Site conditions matter too. A sloped yard needs taller posts on one side. Tight side yards mean the crew carries every board by hand, which adds labor time.

Can you put Trex boards on an existing deck frame?

Sometimes. New boards can go on an old frame if the frame is sound. The joists also need to be close enough together. That is called resurfacing, and it often costs less because the frame stays.

The frame has to pass a careful inspection first. Rotted joists, a weak ledger or bad footings mean the frame should be rebuilt. Learn more about our composite deck resurfacing service on Long Island.

Is a Trex deck worth the cost over wood?

A pressure-treated wood deck costs less up front. But it needs cleaning and staining every few years. Trex boards need soap and water instead of stain.

Over 15 or 20 years, the lower upkeep closes much of the price gap. Capped composite also handles moisture and salt air well. That matters for decks in Long Beach and other homes near the water.

One downside is heat. Dark boards get hot in full sun. Lighter colors stay cooler, so pick a color with your sun exposure in mind.

How to lower the cost of a Trex deck

You can keep the Trex look without paying for every upgrade. These choices usually save the most.

  • Choose a simple rectangle instead of many angles and levels.
  • Use an entry-level board line for the deck surface.
  • Keep the deck low to limit stairs and railings.
  • Reuse a sound frame when an inspection supports it.
  • Skip built-in benches and planters, or add them later.

Height has a big effect on railings. Building codes generally require guards on decks more than 30 inches above the ground. A low deck may need little or no railing, which can save a lot.

How long does it take to build a Trex deck?

On-site work for a typical new deck often takes one to two weeks. Weather and inspections can stretch that. The permit process can add several weeks before work starts, so plan ahead for summer.

How to get an accurate Trex deck quote

A clear quote makes it easy to compare contractors. Ask for these details in writing.

  • The deck size in square feet, plus any stairs
  • The exact Trex product line and color
  • Whether railings are included and what style
  • Whether the frame is new or reused
  • Whether removal of the old deck is included
  • Who handles the permit and what it costs

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Trex deck last?

A well-built Trex deck can last 25 years or more. The frame underneath matters just as much as the boards. Ask how the frame will be built and flashed.

Does a Trex deck need sealing or staining?

No. Trex boards do not need sealing or staining. Clean them with soap and water a couple of times a year.

Do I need a permit to put Trex boards on my old deck?

Replacing only the deck boards often needs no permit in many towns. Work on the frame, footings or ledger usually does. Check with your town or village before work starts.

Is Trex cheaper than TimberTech?

It depends on the product lines you compare. Entry-level lines from both brands cost less than their premium lines. Compare the specific boards and not just the brand names.
