We tell you honestly whether resurfacing or replacement is the right call.
When resurfacing beats replacement — and when it doesn’t
Composite deck resurfacing makes sense when the frame is structurally sound. That means: pressure-treated joists that are firm when probed, no joist hanger failure, a ledger that is solidly attached to the house rim joist, and concrete footings that have not heaved or cracked. When those four conditions are met, resurfacing saves Long Island homeowners $10,000–$20,000 compared to a full tear-down and rebuild.
The frame on most Long Island decks built after 2000 is still in good shape at the 10–15 year mark — even when the surface boards have faded, cracked, split, or grown mold. First-generation composite boards from the early 2000s (Trex Original, early ChoiceDek) were not capped and absorbed moisture readily. The frames beneath them are often still solid because pressure-treated framing outlasts uncapped composite boards by a decade or more.
We probe every joist and check every ledger connection during the free inspection. If we find compromised framing, we tell you before we quote — because covering a bad frame with new composite is not a repair, it is a liability. Our framing repair rate on resurfacing jobs is around 30%, and most repairs add $500–$1,500 to the total scope.
Composite deck resurfacing cost on Long Island — 2026 pricing by board
All prices below are installed — labor, demo, permit, and disposal included for a standard 300 sq ft deck. Larger or smaller decks scale linearly. Joist sistering or ledger repair adds $300–$1,500 depending on scope and is priced separately after the frame inspection.
| Board Line | Type | 300 sq ft installed |
|---|---|---|
| Trex Enhance Naturals | Capped composite | $6,500 – $9,500 |
| Trex Transcend | Premium capped composite | $8,500 – $12,000 |
| TimberTech PRO Legacy | Capped composite | $7,000 – $10,000 |
| TimberTech AZEK Vintage | 100% PVC | $9,000 – $14,000 |
| Azek Harvest Collection | Premium 100% PVC | $10,000 – $15,000 |
| Trex Select (boards-only) | Capped composite | $5,500 – $8,000 |
These ranges assume a sound frame with no joist sistering needed. See the full pricing guide for detailed breakdowns including railings, stairs, and permit fees by county.
Our composite deck resurfacing process
Free frame inspection
We walk every joist with a probe, check the ledger connection at the house, look at every footing, and verify hanger hardware. Most inspections take 20–30 minutes. You get a written opinion on whether resurfacing or replacement makes sense — and why.
Fixed-price scope + permit filing
Once you approve the scope, we file the permit with Nassau or Suffolk County on your behalf. Resurfacing permits typically approve in 5–14 business days. We do not start demo until the permit is in hand.
Demo and frame repair (day 1)
Remove all existing deck boards and hardware. Any discovered joist sistering, ledger plate reinforcement, or hardware replacement happens now — nothing is hidden under new decking. Photo documentation of frame condition before and after.
Composite installation (days 2–4)
Your chosen board line installed with hidden fasteners or face screws per manufacturer specs. Grooved boards for hidden fastener systems get proper spacing for thermal expansion. Fascia boards, picture-frame borders, and trim complete the finished edge.
Final inspection + walk-through
County inspection, cleanup, and walk-through with you. We explain the maintenance schedule (essentially: annual pressure wash) and warranty registration. You receive a copy of the permit sign-off for your home records.
