A paver patio is only as good as its base. We excavate 8–10 inches, compact in 2-inch lifts with a 3,000-lb plate compactor, and build a 6-inch base of 3/4-inch crushed stone before a single paver goes down. Every joint gets Techniseal polymeric sand — the stuff that locks the pavers and keeps weeds from rooting in the cracks.
The result: a patio that doesn't shift, doesn't settle, and still looks new ten years in. We've seen too many Long Island paver jobs done on a 2-inch sand base fail inside three years. We don't do it that way.
